Premier Zhu Makes 3-point Proposal on Cooperation Between China, ASEAN
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said Monday in Phnom Penh that accelerating the process of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Zone serves the common interests of both ASEAN and China and contributes to faster progress of East Asia cooperation as a whole.
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said Monday in Phnom Penh that accelerating the process of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Zone serves the common interests of both ASEAN and China and contributes to faster progress of East Asia cooperation as a whole.
In a three-point proposal contained in a speech that Premier Zhu delivered at the sixth China-ASEAN summit (10+1) held here Monday afternoon, Zhu said China is supportive of targeting 2010 as the year for the completion of the Free Trade Zone.
He said China stands ready to make joint efforts with all ASEAN countries to move forward the all-round economic cooperation through the establishment of the Free Trade Zone.
The Chinese premier also proposed launching the cooperation in the comprehensive development of the Mekong River basin to push forward the process of ASEAN integration.
Zhu attended the first summit of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) from six countries that share the Mekong River, namely, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. The summit was held here Sunday.
China will do as much as it can to increase input in the development of the Mekong River basin and support the implementation of the Joint GMS Summit Declaration and relevant development programs, Zhu said.
As to the cooperation in non-traditional security areas with ASEAN, both China and ASEAN should intensify their comprehensive cooperation in this regard to promote regional peace and security.
"Terrorism and other non-traditional security issues have become increasingly salient," Zhu said.
He expressed the hope that the two sides would gradually draw up and implement relevant cooperation programs on the basis of existing mechanism.
The 10+1 meeting between ASEAN and China will end late Monday.
