Premier Holds Talks with Cambodian Prime Minister

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji Saturday held talks here with his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen on promotion of friendly relations between the two countries.

Premier Holds Talks with Cambodian Prime Minister
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji Saturday held talks here with his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen on promotion of friendly relations between the two countries.

Zhu spoke highly of the Cambodian domestic situation, saying that with the maintenance of a political and social stability, Cambodia has sustained economic development and improvement of people's life.

He said that the Cambodian government has pursued a policy of independence and focused efforts on developing the economy. "This accords with the fundamental interests of the Cambodian people," he added.

Zhu affirmed that China firmly supports the Cambodian government to stick to the road of development with Cambodian characteristics.

The Chinese premier also said that as a host country, Cambodia has done a good job in making preparations for a series of meetings of leaders of East Asian nations, such as the summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and that of ASEAN plus China, Japan and South Korea (10+3). He wished the meetings a great success.

Hun Sen said that the Cambodian government and people have attached great importance to the friendly relations between the two countries. The Cambodian-Chinese relations have entered a new development stage, Hun Sen added.

Hun Sen said that Zhu's visit will promote the development of the friendly relations between Cambodia and China. He expressed his thanks to Zhu for the Chinese assistance and support to Cambodia over the past decades.

After the talks, the two sides signed two agreements on economic and technological cooperation and exchanged two documents on material assistance and the construction of a Cambodian highway by the Chinese government.

On Saturday, China and ASEAN also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Agricultural Cooperation.

Zhu arrived in Phnom Penh Friday to pay an official visit to Cambodia and attend a number of regional meetings. He is scheduled to leave for home on Monday.
