Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji arrived at Phnom Penh on Friday evening to kick off an official visit to Cambodia, during which a number of documents on bilateral economic operation are expected to be signed.

In a statement delivered upon arrival, Zhu said China and Cambodia are friendly neighbors with the traditional friendship between the two peoples going back to ancient times.

In recent years, he continued, "the friendship between China and Cambodia forged and nurtured by the Chinese leaders of three generations and His Majesty Sihanouk has been continuously consolidating and growing and the mutually beneficial cooperation in all spheres has been increasingly deepening, which not only serves the interests of the two peoples, but also is conducive to the stability, development and prosperity of this region."

Zhu is expected to meet, among other Cambodia leaders, King Sihanouk and hold talks with Prime Minister Hun Sen.

"With a view to promoting friendship, expanding common ground and deepening cooperation, I will have, during my visit, in-depth exchanges of views with the Cambodian leaders on matters concerning bilateral ties and issues of common interest," he said.

"We will support and cooperate with our host and make concerted efforts with leaders of other countries to make this summit a grand event showcasing the cooperation in East Asia," he said.

The premier expressed his belief that his visit to Cambodia will yield positive achievements and the summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), to be held here on Nov. 4, will be a complete success.

Zhu will also attend the first meeting of Greater Mekong Subregional leaders, which is slated for Sunday, on how to strengthen the economic cooperation in the region.

Other meetings Zhu will attend include ASEAN's annual meeting with China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK), or the 10+3, and another meeting with ASEAN leaders, or the 10+1, as well as having talks with Japanese and ROK leaders. The three meetings will convene here next Monday.

Zhu is scheduled to leave Cambodia for home on Monday.
