China's Golden Harvest at FESPIC Games

The dominant Chinese contingent grabbed 22 more gold medals to bring their gold medal total to 191 on Thursday, one day before the 8th Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled (FESPIC Games) close in Busan.

The dominant Chinese contingent grabbed 22 more gold medals to bring their gold medal total to 191 on Thursday, one day before the 8th Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled (FESPIC Games) close in Busan.

With competitions finished in many of the gold-rich sports, the pace of the Chinese golden rush slowed down but they are still far above others in terms of gold medals and medals total. The Chinese also feature 90 silver and 50 bronze to total at 331 medals.

Their closest rivals and hosts South Korea have won 59 gold, 64silver and 58 bronze for a total collection of 181 medals.

Ranked third to eighth in the medal standings are Thailand on 43-47-36, Japan (32-24-24), Hong Kong, China (26-15-15), Chinese Taipei (17-25-21), Australia (16-16-10) and New Caledonia (7-1-2).

He Junquan became the most decorated athlete so far, with six gold medals, of the week-long Games, after he took the S5 class men's 50 meters freestyle title late in the evening. His other victories were scored in 100m freestyle, 50m backstroke, SM5 class200m individual medley and two relay events -- 4x50m freestyle relay and 4x50m medley relay.

As action finished in the swimming pool on Thursday, the Chinese team garnered 68 gold medals out of an originally scheduled total of 126.

Other sports and events that finished their respective competitions on Thursday were archery, badminton, goalball, powerlifting, soccer, volleyball and wheelchair tennis.

According to the original Games schedule, the closing day of the week-long Games on Friday will see nine gold medals decided in three sports -- athletics, lawn bowls and wheelchair basketball.

The 8th FESPIC Games for the Disabled will conclude at a closing ceremony in the main stadium of the Busan Sports Complex.
