Shipping has been banned from the man-made diversion channel built for ships during the second phase of construction of the Three Gorges project, with the last ship passing through on Thursday afternoon.

The canal, 3.5 kilometers long, is located near Yichang in central China's Hubei province, where the world's largest hydropower project, the Three Gorges dam, is being built.

It came into use in 1998 allowing ships of 3,000 tons to pass through while the second section of the dam was under construction.

The channel is to be dammed on November 6 to pave the way for the third phase of construction of the huge dam - 2,309 meters long and 185 meters high when completed.

Following the canal damming, water will be discharged from 22 diversion sluices on the lower part of the main dam.

About 60 million tons of cargo and 13.53 million passengers have been shipped through the canal since 1998.
