Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) expressed Thursday his grief over the death of Professor Tien Chang-lin, former chairman of the Chief Executive's Commission on Innovation and Technology.
Tung praised Tien, who died Tuesday at California, the United States, at the age of 67, for having led the commission in mapping out strategies and laying the foundation for Hong Kong's public programs for strengthening the use of innovation and technology from March 1998 to July 1999.
"Through his strenuous efforts, he has successfully won public awareness and acceptance of the application of innovation and technology as a key driver of economic transformation in Hong Kong," Tung said.
"He is a long-time friend of mine and a staunch supporter of Hong Kong. He will be remembered by the academic and business sectors for his passion, vision and charisma as well as his unfailing pursuit of excellence in science and technology," Tung continued.
Tung called Mrs. Tien Thursday morning to extend his deepest condolences to her and members of the family.
Tien, an internationally renowned expert of thermal sciences, was chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, from 1990-1997. He was the first Asian-American to have headed a major research university in the United States.
He was awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal, the highest honor of the HKSAR, by the HKSAR government earlier this month. His wife came to Hong Kong to accept the award on his behalf since he was too weak.
Donald Tsang, administrative secretary, and Henry Tang, secretary for commerce, industry and technology, also expressed their grief over Tien's death.
