Defending champions China tumbled as they were handed a 2-1 loss by the U.S. team in the fifth round on Wednesday at the 35th Chess Olympiad in Bled, Slovenia.

Zhao Xue defeated Elena Donaldson but her teammates Xu Yuhua and Wang Pin lost to their respective opponents.

The defeat made China slip to the sixth place, tying with another five teams on 10.5 points.

"They are different without Xie Jun because she is the leader of the team," said Nona Gaprindashvili, former Georgian world champion.

Former world champion Xie was absent from the Olympiad as she just gave birth to a baby girl.

Georgia made up for their regret after falling to the United States in the third round by occupying the first position on 12 points after trouncing India 3-0.

The U.S. are close behind on 11.5 points.

Russian men were held to a 2-2 draw by title-contenders Armenia, sharing temporarily the second place with Armenia on 15 points.

The Russian grabbed the lead after Alexander Morozevich's attack against Gabriel Sargissan, spiced up with a queen sacrifice, crashed through.

Smbat Lputian's mastery of the French Defense enabled Armenia to equalize against the defending champions.

Russian grand master Garry Kasparov and Alexander Khalifman drew with Vladimir Akopian and Karen Asrian to make an even score.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, taking full advantage of the draw, climbed to the top of the standings on 15.5 points after outplayed Poland 3-1.
