The friendly cooperation between China and Germany is in the fundamental interests of the two peoples and will help maintain world peace and development, says top Chinese legislator Li Peng.
Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), made the remark while meeting with formerGerman President Richard Von Weizsacker in Beijing on Tuesday.
Li praised Weizsacker for his persistent efforts in promoting bilateral ties.
Li said the cooperation between China and Germany had reaped benefits in the past 30 years and the frequent high-level visits by both countries had greatly deepened mutual understanding and trust. The two countries had many common interests and similar opinions on international and regional issues, Li said.
Bilateral cooperation in trade and business had also grown rapidly and had spread to such new fields as high-technology, environmental protection and law, Li said.
China was now Germany's largest trading partner in Asia and Germany was China's largest partner for trade and technological cooperation in Europe, Li said.
Weizsacker said he hoped parliamentarians from both countries especially young ones could communicate more in the future.
Weizsacker, who visited the Three Gorges Project and Shanghai before the meeting, said he was impressed by his visit.
