China's youth basketball team, which routed India 127-40 in its first appearancein the first-ever Asian under-20 women youth basketball championships held here, has set its major aim at nurturing young players for 2004 and 2008 Olympics.
Sun Fengwu, the Chinese team head coach, said here Tuesday thathis team was formed mainly for the Athens and the Beijing Olympic Games. He expressed the hope that the young players could get mature through the competition.
Despite the overwhelming victory on Monday, the opening day of the 7-day championships, Sun criticized his players for low pace in defense and lack of combination.
"Five players of the right age from the Chinese national team have joined our squad. But it needs more time for them to have a better combination with others. There is still room for the teamwork of the whole squad to be improved." Sun said.
"Our arch rivals in the championships are still South Korea andJapan, both of whom have also absorbed some players of the right age from their national squads. I hope we can do well in the matches against them." he added.
Besides hosts China, South Korea, Japan, India, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Malaysia and Mongolia have sent teams tocompete in the championships.
On Monday, South Korea crushed Sri Lanka 127-21, Chinese Taipeiedged Thailand 87-84, Japan beat Malaysia 78-54.
