China Continue 'Golden Rush' at 8th FESPIC Games

After winning more than half of the gold medals on offer on the competitions' opening day, China continued their "golden rush" , grabbing 48 gold medals at the 8th Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled (FESPIC Games) on Monday.

After winning more than half of the gold medals on offer on the competitions' opening day, China continued their "golden rush" , grabbing 48 gold medals at the 8th Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled (FESPIC Games) in Busan on Monday.

The second day of the competition also saw two more new world records set, one each in archery and powerlifting. With two new world marks on Sunday, there have been four new world records set at the Games here.

China's Bian Jianxin won the women's up to 48kg open class powerlifting title with a lift of 111, which improved her own world record of 110.5 she set while winning the event at the 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games.

"This is the second time that I competed in the 48kg category after I won the world championships in July in Malaysia," said theworld and Paralympic champion.

And it was her 10th gold medal at international competitions. The 28-year-old is a college graduate, majoring in English. "English has widened my range of knowledge and help me make much more friends, both at home and abroad," she said after today's victory.

She said her future goal is to win at the 2004 and 2008 Paralympic Games. "And I wish to have a baby after the Athens Games," she said.

South Korean Lee Hong-gu scored 1,277 points in the W2 men's individual archery event to beat the original world mark of 1,266 set by his compatriot Lee Ouk-soo in 1994 in Beijing.

There have been seven athletes who have won three gold medals each. Among them are four Chinese, and one each from South Korea, Thailand, and Hong Kong, China.

China remain at the top of the medal standings, with 83 gold, 37 silver and 19 bronze.

Thailand rank second with a medal credit of 20-18-11, followed by hosts South Korea on 15-25-16, Hong Kong, China (13-8-8), Japan(7-5-7), Australia (6-4-4-), Chinese Taipei (4-6-3) and New Caledonia (4-0-1).

The third day of the week-long Games will witness actions in 17sports with a total of 106 gold medals at stake.
