Compromises needed to get compromises on Iraq: Annan
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said in the United Nations Monday that he is still hopeful that the UN Security Council will come up with a resolution, but "it would require some compromises to get compromises."
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said the United Nations Monday that he is still hopeful that the UN Security Council will come up with a resolution, but "it would require some compromises to get compromises."
The UN chief made the remarks following the 15-member council met behind closed doors with the heads of the International AtomicEnergy Agency (IAEA) and the UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) to provide input regarding the latest push to return UN weapons inspectors to Iraq.
"What I can tell you is that they are in very serious deliberations on this topic," Annan said. "Mr. ElBaradei and Mr. Blix are there with them, clarifying their needs and answering questions that the Council members have posed."
Stressing the Iraqi issue is "a grave matter of war and peace,"Annan said "it is appropriate that the Council goes about it in a deliberate manner."
"I'm still hopeful that the Council will come up with a resolution, a resolution that all of them can sign on to, or a vast majority. But it would require some compromises to get compromises," he noted.
The chief UN inspectors told reporters at the same stakeout that they would welcome a new resolution but require rights to doing inspections independently.
"Now our feelings are that there will be a resolution, we are looking forward to that, and we want to get started as soon as we can," he said.
