Putin Cancels Visit to Denmark to Protest 'World Chechen Congress'
Russian Foreign Ministry said Monday that President Vladimir Putin would cancel his visit to Denmark, originally scheduled for November 11-12, to protest the holding of the "World Chechen Congress" in Copenhagen.
Russian Foreign Ministry said Monday that President Vladimir Putin would cancel his visit to Denmark, originally scheduled for November 11-12, to protest the holding of the "World Chechen Congress" in Copenhagen.
"The position assumed by the Danish authorities, which allowed the holding of the so-called World Chechen Congress, causes deep outrage in Russia," said a statement of the ministry.
"This gathering is being organized and financed by Chechen terrorists and their accomplices as well as patrons from al-Qaeda,which, as it has become absolutely evident, are behind the monstrous act of terrorism in Moscow," reads the document.
The statement criticized the Danish authorities of allowing theconvention in the excuse of the freedoms of speech and assembly.
"No freedom of speech, as well as any other freedom, can be allowed for terrorists who blast Moscow and New York," the document says.
Moscow had earlier strongly protested Denmark's decision to allow the "World Chechen Congress" to be held in Copenhagen, and First Deputy Foreign Minister Valery Loshchinin summoned Danish ambassador in Moscow on Sunday to stress Russia's opposition.
