Bangladeshi PM Shocked at Deaths in Train Accident

Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia has expressed profound shock at the loss of lives in a tragic train accident on Sunday.

Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia has expressed profound shock at the loss of lives in a tragic train accident on Sunday.

In a message of condolence, Khaleda Zia conveyed her deep sympathy to the members of the bereaved families.

The prime minister directed the authorities concerned to ensure proper treatment of those injured in the accident and wished theirearly recovery.

Seven people were killed and 30 others injured when two passenger trains collided head-on at Azampur station near the southeastern city of Brahmanbaria in the early hours of Sunday.

Railway officials said that the authorities had recovered seven bodies from the wreckage and shifted 30 wounded passengers to the nearby hospitals.

The accident took place when an Sylhet bound express, standing at Azampur station, was hit by a Chittagong bound express on the same track at the station.

One engine jumped on top of the other in a mangled state, while nine compartments of two trains had jumped off the track, according to witnesses.

As per preliminary findings the Chittagong bound express ignoring a signal entered into the track on which the Sylhet bound express was standing.

The railway authorities have suspended loco master assistant and loco master of the moving train and on duty station master of Azampur station for negligence of duty and disregarding signal.

The railway authorities have formed a four-member high powered investigation Committee to investigate the incident.
