China, which had dominated the four past Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled (FESPIC Games), earned a flying start at the 8th Games here by taking 35 of 65 gold medals on offer on the first day of competitions.

The opening day saw nine athletes winning two gold medals each, including six winners from China and one each from New Caledonia, Australia and Hong Kong, China.

Wang Xiaofu, at the age of 13 as the youngest member of the Chinese contingent for the week-long Games, clocked two minutes 33.42 seconds to win the SM8 class men's 200 meters individual medley swimming event.

At the national championships for the disabled earlier this year, Wang set a personal best of 2:39.60, which was more than 16 seconds faster than the world record. With the victory here on Sunday, he improved his personal best by more than six seconds.

Wang was also in the title-winning Chinese quartet for the MAX34P class men's 4x100m freestyle relay event.

Chinese Sun Haitao set a new world record in F12 class men's shot put final, with a best throw of 16.04 meters.

Ko Hee-sook from South Korea scored a total of 312 points in W1/2 class women's individual archery event, which broke the world mark of 281, set in 1994 by Chinese Mo Yixiu.

China now led the Games' medal tally, with 35 gold, 20 silver and 12 bronze for a total of 67 medals.

Thailand was ranked second on a medal credit of 7-4-4, followed by Hong Kong, China (5-4-5), hosts South Korea (3-11-3) and Chinese Taipei (3-2-2).
