Iraq on Saturday urged the United Nations to take steps to stop the violations of Iraq's airspace by US-British warplanes and hold them responsible according to the international law and relevant UN resolutions.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri made the call in a letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the official Iraqi News Agency reported.
In the letter, Sabri urged Annan to ask UN Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM) "to fulfill its duties and inform the Security Council about these (US-British) violations immediatly."
"These violations constitute state terrorism and aggression on Iraq's sovereignty and UN peace-keeping operations as well," he added.
Sabri called upon the United Nations to provide UNICOM with necessary equipments to observe all violations and inform the Security Council to take actions to stop the US-British violations.
US and British planes have been patrolling the southern and northern no-fly zones in Iraq since the 1991 Gulf War with the claimed aim of protecting the Kurds in the north and Shiite Muslimsin the south from the persecution of the Iraqi government.
Iraq alleged that more than 1,400 Iraqis have been killed and over 1,400 others injured by the US-British bombings in the no-fly zones since the end of the Gulf War.
