The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) and the United States Air Forces (USAF) will be conducting the bilateral exercise of Exercise Commando Sling series in the South China Sea starting Oct. 28, 2002, Singapore's Ministry of Defense (MinDef) said Saturday.
The MinDef said that the exercise is designed to provide various types of air combat training for pilots from the two air forces, and since 1991, the RSAF has been hosting this bilateral exercise several times each year.
For the first time in the exercise, fighter jets from the RSAF's overseas detachments in the United States will be flown back to participate in the exercise, the MinDef said, adding that five F-16C/Ds jets commenced their journey back to Singapore on Oct. 22 and traveled through Hawaii and Guam.
According to the MinDef, two RSAF KC-135R tankers, currently also based in the United States, provided air-to-air refueling support for this long-range deployment.
For the coming exercise, the USAF will participate with about 200 personnel and six F-15 Eagles, while the RSAF contingent includes 200 personnel, eight F-16C/Ds, eight F-5S/Ts and four A4-SU Super Skyhawks, the MinDef said.
Besides the professional benefits, the MinDef noted, the exercise provides opportunities for interaction and professional exchange among the officers and men from the two Air Forces, promotes mutual understanding and fosters closer relations between the RSAF and USAF.
