Sixty-seven hostages were killed on Saturday when Russian special forces stormed a Moscow theater, where they were held hostage by a gang of armed Chechens for nearly 57 hours, Russian Deputy Interior Minister Vladimir Vasiliev said.

He said more than 750 hostages were released in the operation and there were no children among the dead.

He also said 34 hostage-takers were killed, and two others were detained. Head of the Federal Security Service, Nikolai Patrushev, said earlier that "none of the hostage-takers managed to get away."

Vasiliev confirmed that a special gas was used to knock out everyone in the theater to allow the special forces to enter. But he denied that the deaths were caused by the use of the gas.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Valery Loshchinin confirmed that all 75 foreigners among the hostages were not hurt.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is now holding a session with Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov, Interior Minister Boris Gryzlov, Head of the Federal Security Service Patrushev and other key security officials, Russian news agencies reported.

Before that, Putin visited Moscow's Skifosovsky emergency medicine clinic, where 42 hostages had been sent for medical treatment.
