UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said here Friday that he expected the return of UN inspectors to Iraq "with a united council behind them."
"I do expect a council resolution and I expect it to be unanimous," Annan told reporters as he returned for work for the first day at the UN headquarters in New York following his 12-day official visit to seven Asian countries.
"The inspectors will go back to Iraq with a united council behind them," he said, wishing for united Security Council acts ona revised US draft seeking tougher inspection regime.
But the 15-member council was further divided with challenging "non-paper" documents from France and Russian, as the 10 elected members joined in the discussion and resumed consultation Friday morning behind closed doors.
The council held its first-ever full consultation Wednesday night on a revised US draft which dropped "automatic use of force"but insisted on "military escort" and "doing interview outside." The meeting suspended with no consensus reached.
Although eager for quick action, the UN chief would not predictwhen the council could come up with new instructions for the inspectors. He reminded reporters that "the draft resolution was given to the members only this week."
In a related development, chief UN weapons inspector Hans Blix is due to brief the council on the coming Monday.
