Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan, at a meeting with his Russian counterpart Igor Ivanov here Friday, strongly condemned the hostage-taking in Moscow by a group of Chechen separatists and expressed shock over the incident on half of the Chinese government.
Tang described the hostage-taking as a serious terrorist act and said that the Chinese government is greatly concerned about the incident.
The Chinese government has persistently and resolutely opposed and condemned any form of terrorism, and will, as always, firmly support efforts by the Russian government to fight terrorist, separatist and extremist forces, Tang said.
The United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution tostrongly condemn the inhuman act by the Chechen separatists.
"We trust that under the leadership of President Vladimir Putin, the Russian government will certainly be able to properly settle this crisis," Tang emphasized.
Speaking on the same occasion, Ivanov thanked the Chinese government for extending sympathy and support to Russia over the incident. He said that the hostage-taking is not an isolated terrorist act, but is part of international terrorism, which should be cracked down through international cooperation.
During the meeting, the two sides exchanged opinions, in an in-depth way, on Putin's visit to China this year as well as major international issues including those of Iraq and the Korean peninsula.
On Wednesday, a group of Chechen separatists stormed a Moscow theater as an audience of about 700 people watched a popular musical performance, taking the people inside hostage. In the ongoing hostage-taking crisis, the separatists shot and killed as least one captive and said they were ready to die for their "cause."
