Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan on Wednesday called on the international community to make continued efforts to strengthen cooperation in fighting all forms of terrorism.

Tang made the appeal at a ministerial meeting held in Los Cabos, northern Mexico, as a prelude to the 10th annual meeting of leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum scheduled for October 26-27.

He said that as a major economic cooperation forum in the Asia-Pacific region, APEC should take further steps to deepen anti-terror cooperation, strengthen customs inspection against terrorism, cut off funding sources for terrorists and ensure the safety of telecommunications on the basis of the anti-terror statement issued by APEC leaders in the 2001 APEC leaders meeting held in Shanghai, China.

Tang recalled the deadly terrorist bombing on the island of Bali in Indonesia on October 12 that killed more than 200 people, and the series of recent terrorist attacks in the Philippines, saying that these terrorist attacks mean terrorism is still directly threatening peace in the Asia-Pacific region.

China, which has been deeply victimized by terrorism, resolutely condemns and opposes all forms of terrorism, supports and earnestly implements relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and actively participates in all the anti-terror cooperation of APEC, said the Chinese minister.

APEC, set up in 1989 in response to the growing interdependence among Asia-Pacific economies and to the need to advance Asia-Pacific economic dynamism and sense of community, groups Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Chinese Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan,South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam.

In the wake of the deadly terrorist bombing on Bali and the series of terrorist attacks in the Philippines, it is expected that global security will dominate this year's APEC leaders meeting.
