Vice-Premier of the State Council Qian Qichen said Sunday (Oct 20) that Taiwan compatriots are always backbones for maintaining a peaceful, stable and sound development of cross-Straits relations. We place hopes on the broad masses of Taiwan compatriots in the process of promoting the development of cross-Straits ties and fulfilling the peaceful reunification of the motherland.
Mr. Qian Qichen made the speech when attending the seventh national conference of Taiwan compatriots' representatives, which was opened Sunday afternoon.
The fulfillment of peaceful reunification of the motherland is the common aspirations of all Chinese including Taiwan compatriots. It is in the practical and long-term interests of those on both sides of the Taiwan Straits to develop across-Straits ties, earlier fulfill three direct links and push ahead the great cause of peaceful reunification, he said. The view that it is beneficial to both sides if reunified and detrimental when separated has won increased approval among the Taiwan compatriots.
Mr. vice-premier stressed that Taiwan compatriots with a glorious patriotic tradition are always basic power for maintaining a peaceful, stable and sound development of the cross-Straits relations. And we place hopes on Taiwan compatriots for promoting the development of relations between the two sides and fulfilling the cause of peaceful reunification of the motherland. We fully understand and respect wishes and demands of Taiwan compatriots for being masters of their own. However, such demands are essentially different from "Taiwan independence". We should safeguard the legal rights and interests of Taiwan compatriots in whatever circumstances.
He reiterated that in the world there is only one China, the mainland and Taiwan both belong to the same China, and China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity must not be separated. Pinpointing Taiwan authorities' ravings about the mainland and Taiwan as "two countries on each side" and a "referendum" to decide Taiwan 's future, Mr. Qian Qichen pointed out that such separatist speech borrowed from Lee Teng-hui's "Two Chinas" is another overt provocation against the "One China" principle. "Taiwan independence" finds no support from the people and will get nowhere. Any attempts to split the motherland are doomed to failure. The Chinese people are determined to and capable of crushing all splittist intrigues, and have full confidence in the prospect of the cause of peaceful reunification.
