The death toll in the car bomb attack on an "Egged" bus in northern Israel has risen to 16, Israeli TV reported.
According to the report, over 40 people were injured when a car bomb blew up next to the vehicle of the Israeli national bus company. Five of the injured were in serious condition.
The explosion occurred at 4:23 p.m. (1423 GMT) Monday near the town of Pardes Hannah which is located about half-way between Tel Aviv and Haifa.
"As far as we know at this time, a car moved alongside the bus and exploded," police spokesman Haim Bolimovski told Israel television.
The bus caught fire in the explosion, preventing police and rescue workers from approaching the vehicle immediately.
The military wing of Islamic Jihad, Al Quds Brigades, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
