Annan Urges Parties to Consolidate Peace in Cote d'Ivoire
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said on Monday that he was encouraged by agreement on a truce between rebels and government forces in Cote d'Ivoire, and called upon parties concerned to consolidate peace in the West African nation.
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said on Monday that he was encouraged by agreement on a truce between rebels and government forces in Cote d'Ivoire, and called upon parties concerned to consolidate peace in the West African nation.
Annan, currently on a visit to central Asia, said in a statement issued by his spokesman here that he "is encouraged by the cessation of hostilities in Cote d'Ivoire. He urges the parties to do everything possible to consolidate this important step through dialogue and national reconciliation."
"The UN will continue to support the sustained efforts of ECOWAS (the Economic Community of West African States) to help theIvoirian people achieve peace, tolerance and prosperity in Cote d'Ivoire," the statement said.
"The secretary-general calls on other international partners toremain attentive to the needs of Cote d'Ivoire in this difficult period," the statement said.
The truce accord was signed last week following a military coupon Sept. 19.
