As all preparation work is progressing steadily, conditions for construction are now available for closing the open channel of the Yangtze River scheduled for next month.

Zheng Shouren, chief engineer with the Yangtze River Water Conservancy Committee, said that the exact time for the closure of the project depends on the water condition of the Yangtze River. This time, both water flow and drop are several times that of 1997, the comprehensive difficulties involved are also unprecedented in the history of world hydro-power construction.

Reporters see from the spot that except for normal stones, some special stones with a stronger wash-resistant capability are used, some 20-ton pyramid-like stones and stones of some 1.3 meters in diameter will be thrown into the water, then they will sit firmly in the water bottom, they will not be washed away easily.

According to the project's chief inspector, so far, some 4.6 million cubic meters of material have been prepared for the project.
