US to Propose New Tough Iraq Resolution Early This Week: Powell
The United States will present the UN Security Council with a new tough resolution on Iraq early this week, US Secretary of State Colin Powell said Sunday.
The United States will present the UN Security Council with a new tough resolution on Iraq early this week, US Secretary of State Colin Powell said Sunday.
"I expect early this week to put down the full resolution afterwe've had some very useful conversations with a number of our permanent Security Council member colleagues," Powell said on ABC's "This Week."
"It will contain a new, tough inspection regime. And it will make clear that Iraq will face consequences if they frustrate and violate this new inspection regime," he noted.
Powell said US diplomats would consult with both the permanent members and the elected members of the Security Council on the resolution, but he did not know whether they can get to a final solution this week or not.
"There are still some difficult issues," Powell said. "It isn'tjust going to be `here it is' and `that's it.'"
Meanwhile in Baghdad, a government spokesman warned that any new UN Security Council resolution on arms inspections would violate earlier agreements with the United Nations and deal a blowto the credibility of the international body.
"Regarding the ongoing consultations at the Security Council and outside it, we don't see the need for a new resolution," the spokesman said.
"Passing any new resolution that contradicts earlier agreementsrepresents a retreat from the stand that the Security Council should take," he said.
