Jordanian King Abdullah II and US Assistant Secretary of State William Burns on Saturday discussed the next steps aimed at resuming Palestinian-Israeli peace talks as outlined by a quartet meeting on the Middle East.
During the meeting at Jordan's southern Red Sea resort city of Aqaba, Abdullah and Burns reviewed the main features of the action plan worked out recently by the international Quartet Committee in Paris, Jordan's official Petra news agency reported.
The Quartet Committee comprises the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia.
Burns, also the top US Mideast Envoy, briefed the monarch on theplan which includes commitments by all the parties involved and a mechanism for monitoring their performance all along the negotiation period with the main aim of founding a Palestinian state within a three-year period, Petra said.
Abdullah stressed the necessity to restart the negotiation as soon as possible and create the appropriate atmosphere to enable the Palestinians and Israelis to fulfill their commitments as determined by the plan of action.
Their talks also covered the current situation in the region with special reference to the Iraqi issue, Petra said without giving further details.
Jordan, the second Arab country, after Egypt, to have signed a peace treaty with Israel, has been calling for an immediate end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts to pave the way for a just, durable and comprehensive peace in the region.
It also stands for a dialogue between Iraq and the United Nations as the only way to solve the Iraqi crisis.
