Pakistan will withdraw troops from its border with India "shortly," a Foreign Ministry statement said Thursday, following a similar announcement by India on Wednesday to withdraw troops from the border by phase.
"The government of Pakistan has decided to withdraw its forces from the Pakistan-India border to their peace-time locations," the press release said.
The decision was taken in a high-level meeting chaired by President General Pervez Musharraf on Thursday.
The pull back will commence shortly, the press release said.
At the same time another press statement from the Foreign Office said that Pakistan has consistently called for de-escalation, withdrawal by India of its forces to peace-time locations and resumption of a dialogue.
"The government of Pakistan, therefore, regards the Indian government's decision for a phased withdrawal of its armed forces from the Pakistan-India border as a step in the right direction," the statement said.
The implementation on the ground of the Indian government's decision "will receive a positive and timely response from Pakistan," the statement said.
"Pakistan has always stood for normal relations with India and the resolution of the Kashmir dispute as well as all other Pakistan-India differences on the basis of sovereign equality, justice, international norms and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, through a sustained purposeful dialogue," the statement said.
