The rehabilitation and reconstruction of the war-ravaged north and east of Sri Lanka were discussed Wednesday between a chief negotiator of Sri Lanka's separatist Tamil Tiger rebels and a rebel leader, the official Daily News said on Thursday.

A spokesman of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) said that chief negotiator Anton Balashingham and rebel leader Vepillai Prabhakaran discussed in rebel-controlled Wanni area the implementation of the Joint Task Force on north and east reconstruction and rehabilitation agreed by both parties in their first round of peace talks held in Thailand in mid September.

De-mining and accelerating the resettlement of internally displaced persons are also the priority concern of the task force.

Meanwhile, in their two-hour meeting Balashingham also discussed those issues with British MP Gareth Thomas and European MP Robert Evans who are on an inspection tour in the north of the country.

The European Union delegation has pledged to campaign for more aid for the development in the north and east of the country.

Balashingham, who is based in London and led the LTTE delegation in the first round of peace talks in Thailand last month, arrived in the northern Wanni area on Tuesday in preparation for the second round of peace talks with the government due on Oct. 31 in Thailand.

The LTTE rebels have been fighting for a separate homeland for the minority Tamil community in the north and east of the country since 1983. The bloody ethnic conflict has claimed over 64,000 lives.
