China hopes the Japanese government will pay close attention to damage caused by chemical weapons abandoned in China by Japan during World War II.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyu made the remark in Beijing on Tuesday at a regular press conference.

Zhang said China hoped the Japanese government would solve this problem as soon as possible in line with relevant regulations as well as documents reached between the two countries.

Chemical weapons left by the then invading Japanese troops had been discovered in Heilongjiang Province in northeast China and some other provinces, Zhang said.

China and Japan had worked well together not long ago in excavating and retrieving those chemical weapons found in Heilongjiang Province, Zhang said.
