A visiting senior UN official stressed on Tuesday that Yasser Arafat is a democratically-elected leader of the Palestinian people.
Speaking to reporters after his talks with Arab League chief AmrMoussa, Terje Larsen, special coordinator for the Middle East of the United Nations, said the international community will continue to deal with Arafat in his capacity.
The UN official said he discussed with Moussa the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and other regional issues, calling for the resumption of peace talks between the two sides.
He said the Quartet Committee, which comprises the United Nations, the United States, the European Union and Russia, is expected to meet next Thursday on the worsening situation in the Palestinian lands.
On Sept. 17, the Quartet Committee called for establishing a Palestinian state through four stages in 2005.
At least 2,587 people, most of them Palestinians, have been killed since the outbreak of the Palestinian-Israeli violence in late September 2000.
