Russian Deputy Brigade Commander Killed in Skirmish in Chechnya

A Russian deputy brigade commander was killed Monday during a skirmish in Chechnya's Nozhai-Yurt district, where a group of about 50 Chechen rebels tried to force their way into neighboring Dagestan, the Interfax news agency reported.

A Russian deputy brigade commander was killed Monday during a skirmish in Chechnya's Nozhai-Yurt district, where a group of about 50 Chechen rebels tried to force their way into neighboring Dagestan, the Interfax news agency reported.

Igor Khapizov, deputy commander of the 102nd brigade of interior troops, was killed and three other Russian servicemen were wounded in the three-hour fighting, Interfax quoted officers of the brigade as saying.

Akhbednabi Maddigadzhiyev, Security Council Secretary of the Dagestan Republic, where the troop is stationed, confirmed this report, said Interfax.

The Interior Ministry's press service said Chechen rebels had retreated deeper inside Chechnya after losing nine people.
