Sino-Uruguayan Ties Satisfactory: Chinese President
Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Monday in Beijing that China is satisfied with the growth of bilateral ties with Uruguay and wants to increase trade.

Jiang made the remarks during official talks with visiting Uruguayan President Jorge Luis Batlle Ibanez, who arrived here Sunday for a state visit as guest of Jiang.
Jiang praised the frequent high-level exchanges and cooperationin political, economic, cultural and international affairs between China and Uruguay over the past 14 years since the two countries forged diplomatic ties.
Both developing countries, China and Uruguay shared the common tasks of maintaining world peace and promoting common development so the enhancement of bilateral cooperation complied with the fundamental interests of the two peoples, Jiang said.
China had become a major trade partner of Uruguay and the Chinese government encouraged the development of bilateral trade and economic cooperation and hoped entrepreneurs of the two countries would increase communication and explore new cooperative areas.
Jiang also hoped the two countries would have closer cooperation in the World Trade Organization for jointly safeguarding the legal interests of the developing countries.
Jiang expressed appreciation for the Uruguayan government's long-term adherence to the one-China policy.
Batlle said all Uruguayan governments, including his own, had been committed to the growth of bilateral ties after the establishment of diplomatic ties between Uruguay and China. Both nations had common goals in the international arena, maintaining world peace and seeking mutual understanding via multilateral organizations.
Batlle also said that the Uruguayan government would continue its support for China on human rights and adhere to the one-China policy.
He hoped China would become a stable force for the maintenance of world peace and make new contributions to safeguarding the interests of the developing countries.
China and Uruguay also signed five documents for education, quarantine and fisheries cooperation.
