Iraqi President Saddam Hussein said on Monday Iraq is ready to fight against any aggression if a war is imposed on his country by the United States, the official Iraqi News Agency reported.

"No one in the leadership, nor any Iraqi wants the aggression to take place because it will surely have negative impacts. But if the fight is imposed on us, we will fight," Saddam said during a meeting with visiting former Algerian President Ahmed Ben Bella.

Saddam made the remarks on the eve of a referendum to decide whether he would serve as Iraq's head of state for another 7 years and came as the United States is explicitly determined to disarm Iraq, possibly by force.

US President George W. Bush has accused Saddam of posing a "grave threat" to the world by secretly pursuing weapons of mass destruction and supporting international terrorists.

As Bush is mulling over how to achieve a "regime change" in Iraq, the Iraqi leader is poised to win the Tuesday referendum to stay on.

In the 1995 referendum, Saddam secured a 99.96 percent vote and his presidential term was thus renewed for another seven years.
