Visiting United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan was awarded an honorary doctoral degree here Monday by Zhejiang University, a 105-year old institution in east China's Zhejiang Province.
The degree was conferred on Annan in honor of his contribution to world peace, development and prosperity, said university President Pan Yunhe.
Pan said the award reflects the wishes of all at Zhejiang University for a peaceful, prosperous, equal and developed world.
Annan said universities play a crucial role in installing a global outlook in young people.
"Whatever path you choose when you leave this campus, you will enter a world shaped by globalization," Annan told the students present at the conferring ceremony.
"What happens in each country affects another," he said, addingthat "the biggest challenge facing the younger generation is ensuring that globalization becomes a force for good -- a force that works not only for the privileged few, but for all humankind."
Annan began his four-day China visit on Oct. 13 in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province. He is here at the invitation of the Chinese government.
