Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday sent condolences to Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri and Australian Prime Minister John Howard over heavy loss of lives in the explosion in Bali, Indonesia.
A massive explosion from a car bomb near a nightclub on the tourist island of Bali on Sunday killed at least 187 people and wounded more than 300. Many of the victims were Australians and other foreigners.
"These tragic events confirm the importance of even stronger and better coordinated international efforts to wage an uncompromising struggle against international terrorism, the evil of the 21st century," the Kremlin quoted Putin's telegram to the Indonesian president as saying.
In his message to Howard, Putin emphasized the importance of waging an "uncompromising and truly universal struggle" against international terrorism.
"Russia understands the depth of the Australian people's shock and grief. I would like to convey my deepest condolences to the victims' families and relatives, and my sympathy to those injured in that tragedy," Putin said.
