Russia, Georgia Draw up Draft Agreement on Joint Border Patrols

Russian and Georgian officials have finished a draft on jointly patrolling the border, which will be signed soon by border guards chiefs of the two countries, Georgian State Security Minister Valery Khaburdzania told a Sunday press conference in Tbilisi, Russian news agencies reported.

Russian and Georgian officials have finished a draft on jointly patrolling the border, which will be signed soon by border guards chiefs of the two countries, Georgian State Security Minister Valery Khaburdzania told a Sunday press conference in Tbilisi, Russian news agencies reported.

The draft, which provides for "comprehensive measures" in controlling the problem zones of the Georgian-Russian border, involves border guards, interior and defense ministries, as well as other related departments of the two countries, Khaburzaniya was quoted as saying.

The minister said the Georgian and Russian law enforcement agencies and special services would work together permanently, adding that a Georgian delegation would visit Moscow in the near future.

Deputy Director of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) Vladimir Pronichev said at the same press conference that the measures were targeted against "the organized activities of illegal armed groups from both Georgia and Russia."

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze agreed to conduct joint patrols along the borders of the two countries during their recent meeting on the sideline of aMoldova summit.

A Russian border guards delegation flied to Tbilisi last Thursday for detailed talks on this matter and their proposals would be approved next week by the heads of border guards of the two countries.
