At least 182 people were killed inthe bomb blast on the Indonesian tourist island of Bali, Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri said Sunday.
A huge blast on Saturday night destroyed a nightclub on the tourist island of Bali, sparking a devastating inferno that killedat least 182 people and wounded more than 300, many of them foreigners.
Indonesian Police Chief General Da'i Bachtiar said: "This is the worst act of terror in Indonesia's history."
The night club explosion came from a vehicle, Witnesses said.
A second bomb exploded near the US consular office. There were no casualties in the second explosion.
The blasts came three days after the US State Department issueda worldwide alert for terror attacks and highlighted fears by the United States and others that Indonesia, the most populous Muslim nation is becoming a haven for terrorists and that al-Qaida operatives are active.
There was no claim of responsibility for the bombing in the Sari Club at the Kuta Beach resort, which killed Indonesians alongwith Australians, Germans, Canadians, Britons and Swedes.
The first bomb late Saturday destroyed the Sari Club, a popularnightspot frequented by foreigners in the resort of Kuta Beach. The explosion at the US consular office occurred almost simultaneously.
The blast ignited a huge blaze caused by exploding gas cylinders which collapsed the roof structure, trapping hundreds ofrevelers inside.
Bali Police Chief Budi Setyawan said that most of the victims were Australian tourists.
Nobody has claimed responsibility for Saturday's attacks and police have made no arrests.
Last month, a hand grenade exploded in a car near a house belonging to the US Embassy in Jakarta, killing the man suspected of handling it.
