China has officially launched a program to train high-caliber technical workers to ease the shortage of such workers in three to five years, according to a conference on national personnel training held in Shanghai Saturday.

A research report from the Ministry of Labor and Social Security said China at present is facing a grave shortage of technical workers, especially high-caliber technical workers.

A survey of 81 Chinese cities in the first half of this year noted that technical workers were undersupplied in a quarter of these cities. In some cities, only one eighth of the vacancies fortechnical workers are filled.

Chinese experts predict their country's demand for technical workers will jump at a rate of 25 percent in the coming years and the demand for high-caliber technical workers will double.
