China's Asian champion Gu Yuan won the women's hammer title here on Saturday, the fifth day of the week-long athletics competitions at the fortnight 14th Asian Games.
Gu seized the gold after she put the hammer to 70.49 meters in her fourth effort, 0.61 meters short of her Asian record set in the Asian Athletics Championship in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Each athlete has six chances in the finals.
However, Gu was not happy with her result as she said she did not ran her best.
"The result today is not ideal, because of an injury on the right leg," the Asian top hammer women told reporters.
"I planned to upgrade the Asian record, but failed. I will try to achieve a better score in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens," she said.
Her teammate Liu Yinghui finished second in 66.73 meters, whileJapan's Masumi Aya tossed 62.18 meters to take the bronze medal.
