A 43.6 km-long dike has been built at the mouth of China's second largest river, the Yellow River, todefend against tides.

The dike is located in Dongying City, Shandong Province, east China, where the country's second largest oilfield, Shengli Oilfield is based.

A smaller dike was constructed in the 1960s, but it has been damaged by wear and tear and high tides over the past four decades.

The oilfield and the city government have jointly invested almost 300 million yuan to build the new flood defense, to protectlocal infrastructure, industries, and farming facilities.
