Hamas Says Responsible for Tel Aviv Suicide Bombing
The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) claimed responsibility on Thursday for an earlier suicide bombing attack near Tel Aviv, which killed an old woman and wounding 30 others.
The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) claimed responsibility on Thursday for an earlier suicide bombing attack near Tel Aviv, which killed an old woman and wounding 30 others.
In a leaflet signed by its armed wing Izel Dein Al Qassam, the group said that it is "the fourth of a series of attacks against Israelis that Hamas took responsibility for."
Hamas, which rejects Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's request to stop suicide bombing attacks against civilians, said it declined to mention the name of the suicide bomber.
"These attacks come to revenge for the blood of its commander Salah Shehada and all the martyrs of Palestine, especially the 17 people who were killed in Khan Younis on Monday," said the leaflet.
On Monday morning, an Israeli Apache helicopter fired a missile on a group of people gathering near a mosque in the southern Gaza Strip town of Khan Younis, killing 17 and wounding more than 130.
The leaflet also said that Thursday's suicide bombing attack is the "natural reaction to the US congressional bill that names Jerusalem as the capital of the state of Israel."
"We tell the criminal (Ariel) Sharon and his stupid gangs that they would pay a very high price for the siege, the closure and the murder they practice against our people," it said.
Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a top aide to Arafat said that the Israeli military actions and operations practiced against the Palestinian people "are the major reason for the continuation of the ongoing violence and tension."
Abu Rudeineh's statement came in response to an Israeli official statement saying that the Palestinian (National) Authority is responsible for the Tel Aviv suicide bombing attack.
"The continuation of the Israeli military escalation and daily massacres committed against the innocent Palestinian civilians need a strict Arab and international position," said Abu Rudeineh.
Meanwhile, Hamas spokesman in Gaza Abdel Aziz Ranteesi said that the suicide bombing attack "is part of the legal Palestinian self-defense against the Israeli terrorism and part of the movement's strategy to continue resistance."
"Jihad (Holy War) would continue as long as the occupation of our lands keeps going on," said Ranteesi.
