Chinese Qi Haifeng Claims Decathlon Title in Busan

Qi Haifeng of China took the decathlon gold medal with a total of 8,041 points at the Asian Games Thursday. The silver medal went to Dmitriy Karpov of Kazakhstan at 7,995 points. Ahmad Hassan Musa of Qatar finished third at 7,683 points.

Chinese Qi Haifeng Claims Decathlon Title in Busan

Chinese athlete Qi Haifeng claimed the decathlon title with 8,041 points at the Busan Asian Games on Thursday, followed by Kazakh Dmitriy Kaprov with 7,995 points and Qatari Ahmad Hassan Musa with 7,683 points.

Qi's gold is the eighth one for the Chinese Asiad athletics team which tops the athletics gold tally, followed by India with six and Saudi Arabia with five.

Qi, only 19, was lagged behind Kaprov, 21, with a gap of 250 points in the first seven events. But Qi stormed back in the discus and javelin throws to cut the deficit to only 21 points when the final 1,500m race began.

Qi collected enough points in the 1,500m to step onto the top of the awarding podium.

"I performed extremely well in the last three events, the javelin in particular. The points I got today is my personal best." Qi said after the 1,500m race.

"My next aim is to advance to the top eight in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games," he added.

The world record of the event is 9,026 points set by Roman Sebrle from Czech Republic in 2001. The Asian record is 8,445 points held by Ramil Ganiyev of Uzbekistan.
