The Israeli army early Thursday arrested 71 Palestinians in the West Bank, Palestinian security sources reported.
Some 55 of the Palestinians, who are members of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), were detained in the area of Ramallah, where Israeli army launched widespread raids on about 20 Palestinian villages
Local residents said a large number of Israeli infantry troops supported by tanks, army personnel carriers and helicopters raided houses and farms in the villages.
Elsewhere in the West Bank, Israeli troops also arrested 16 other Palestinians overnight, Israel Radio reported.
It said the Israeli army uncovered two tunnels used for smuggling weapons from the Egyptian side of the border into the town of Rafah in southern Gaza Strip.
An Israeli soldier operating an Israeli army bulldozer was lightly injured early Thursday in the operation when an explosive device planted by militants on the borders was detonated.
