Almost 20,000 Armed Forces personnel embarked on the country's largest military exercise called the Warrior Exercise 11/2002 Wednesday.
Nineteen Royal Malaysian Navy warships and 26 air force fighterjets took part in the exercise launched by the Chief of Defence Forces General Mohd Zahidi Zainuddin at the naval base in Pahang state, central Malaysia.
The exercise will evaluate the Armed Forces' capability and effectiveness in joint task operations, Mohd Zahidi said during the launching ceremony.
He said the training would help the Armed Forces test the aspects of technical operations, administration and logistics.
The exercise began unofficially Tuesday and the post-rule phasegoes on till Saturday followed by field training starting on Tuesday and ending on Oct. 25.
The ships will participate in guided missile and torpedo firingdrills in the Straits of Melaka on Oct. 18
Yang di-Pertuan Agong (paramount ruler) Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail, who is the Supreme Commander of theMalaysian Armed Forces, is expected to witness this exercise.
The training will conclude on Oct. 25 when the joint forces embark on large-scale attacks to capture "enemy territory" in GongKedak, Kelantan, northern Malaysia.
Recently, Malaysian armed forces are implementing a modernization program by signing agreements with several western nations for the procurement of weapons' systems for its army, navyand air force, worth billions of Ringgit.
This includes the purchase of three submarines from France at the cost of almost four billion ringgit (1.05 billion US dollars) and 22 G5 (155mm) artillery pieces from South Africa, at over 200 million ringgit (52.63 million US dollars).
The others are the Astros multi-barrel rocket launchers from Brazil(184.2 million US dollars) and the short range air defence system (Shorads) worth one billion ringgit (263 million US dollars).
