IOC Member Gives Thumbs-up to Beijing's Olympics Preparation

An International Olympic Committee (IOC) member on Wednesday said that Beijing has set a fast pace anddone a quality job in its preparations for the 2008 Olympics.

An International Olympic Committee (IOC) member on Wednesday said that Beijing has set a fast pace and done a quality job in its preparations for the 2008 Olympics.

"They've done what is necessary for hosting the games not only ahead of schedule, but also very well," said IOC Singaporean member Ser Miang NG on the sidelines of the ongoing Asian Games.

Ser Miang NG, also member of the Coordination Commission for 2008 Olympics of the IOC, expressed his belief that Beijing will have a smooth preparation in its buildup to the top sporting gala.

"Judging from their pace in preparing the games, I believe the Beijing Games will be the best ever," he said.

As for the prospect for Wushu or martial arts to join the Olympic program, Ser Miang NG said that there is a possibility for the Chinese traditional sport to be included in the 2008 Olympic program.

"Both Beijing organizers and the World Wushu Federation have been working hard in a bid to have the sport included in the Olympics," he said.

"Their efforts have sent a message to the IOC members that Wushu has a strong and sincere desire to join the Olympic family."

The IOC will hold its 114th session at Mexico in November where they will decide the sports program of the 2008 Olympics.

In a bid to control the size and cost of the Olympics, the IOC has set up a special commission to study the issue.

According to the recent report of the commission, the sports of baseball, softball and modern pentathlon are recommended to be excluded outside of the Olympics.

This would make possible for new sports to be incorporated into the Olympics, given that the IOC has stressed the magnitude of the Olympics remain unchanged.
