The publication of the Code of Laws of the People's Republic of China shows that China has established a socialist legal framework with Chinese characteristics, top legislator Li Peng said Wednesday.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of National People's Congress (NPC), said the framework is supported by the Constitution and a large number of laws and rules.

He noted that ruling by law and building China into a socialistcountry governed by law are the basic policy of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and this policy has been written into the Constitution.

China has made great progress in legislative work. By the end of August this year, the NPC and its Standing Committee had passed301 laws, seven legal explanations and 122 decisions on legal issues.

Li said the Code of Laws fully reflects China's legislative work and China's progress towards the ruling by law. He asked compilers to exert more efforts to keep the ode updated.

Compiled by the Commission of Legislative Affairs of the NPC Standing Committee and published by the Law Publishing House, the Code of Laws consists of all existing laws, regulations and rules in China and the international treaties China has signed. It will be updated every year in the future.
