Russia, France Seek Right Environment in Iraq Inspections
Moscow and Paris stressed on Wednesday the importance of ensuring a conducive environment for the United Nations inspection mission in Iraq, and called for the continuation of coordinated steps within the UN Security Council.
Moscow and Paris stressed on Wednesday the importance of ensuring a conducive environment for the United Nations inspection mission in Iraq, and called for the continuation of coordinated steps within the UN Security Council.
The Russian Foreign Ministry, in a statement issued Wednesday, said that during a telephone conversation on Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and his French counterpart Dominique de Villepin discussed the Iraq issue.
"The two sides exchanged opinions on the situation surrounding Iraq and the relevant discussions at the UN Security Council. They underscored the need for practical agreements that would allow UN inspectors to work efficiently in Iraq," the statement said.
The two sides also called on UN Security Council members to continue their closely coordinated work.
Russia and France, two of the five permanent UN Security Council members with veto power, oppose the United States-British proposals to draft a new tough resolution on Iraq that contains provisions for the automatic use of force against that country.
Russia backs the French draft of a resolution for a two-stage ultimatum in resolving the Iraq issue. Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Fedotov said on Tuesday that the French version "in its present form confirms with our stance."
