Reigning Asian champions China beat Sydney Olympic fourth-placers South Korea 82-71 here on Wednesday to remain unbeaten at the women's basketball preliminaries of the Busan Asian Games.
Chinese head coach Gong Luming, who led the Chinese women to a sixth finish at September's world championship where South Korea placed fourth, was conservatively satisfied with the result.
"We tried our best," Gong said. "But I think the South Koreans did not do their utmost."
Trailing 68-50 early in the fourth quarter, the hosts pulled within 69-63 with five minutes remaining and forced a Chinese time-out. The Chinese women came back to hold the South Korean burst and Chen Nan had consecutive baskets to award China a 77-67 lead with one minute and 23 seconds left and secured their fourth straight win at the Asiad.
China trailed 12-11 early in the game before rallying with a 31-15 run connecting the first and the second quarter to lead 42-27 at the half time.
South Korea finished their first round play with four wins against one loss while China will play Chinese Taipei on Thursday in the last game of the six-team round-robin preliminaries.
China, South Korea, Chinese Taipei and Japan have secured their berths in Saturday's semifinals.
