Despite a series of shock defeats in the past five days, table tennis powerhouse China proved Wednesday that its women players were still the world's best, as Wang Nan and Zhang Yining respectively crushed their semifinal opponents 4-0 to make the 14th Asiad singles finalan all-domestic affair for the Chinese.
The world No.1 Wang didn't face much resistance from Singapore's world 10th Li Jia Wei except in the third game which ended 12-10.The other three games ended 11-5, 11-8 and 11-8.
Li, who was just one step away from beating Wang in the Sydney Olympics, has always been a strong rival for the dual Olympic and world champion in singles competition. However, Wang had outclassed Li in all their three encounters at this Asiad.
China's world No.2 and World Cup holder Zhang Yining also finished an easy kill on the other table, outclassing the host player, world No.7 Ryu Ji-hae 11-8, 11-7, 11-8 and 11-6.
If the Chinese women had played in the earlier matches as well as they did on Wednesday, they wouldn't have lost their titles in the women's team, mixed doubles and women's doubles, the worst defeat for them in decades.
