Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski sent a letter Tuesday to NATO Secretary General George Robertson asking for an extension of the NATO Task Force Fox mandate until December 15, 2002, MIA news agency reported.

The security situation in Macedonia has been significantly improved in comparison with the same period last year and this gave credit to the NATO troops for its contribution to full stabilization of the country, said Trajkovski in his letter.

"I wish to suggest for the NATO Task Force Fox to extend its mandate until December 15, 2002, without altering of its role or responsibilities," Trajkovski said.

The three-month NATO mission or "Amber Fox" started last September to ensure the peace process in the Balkan country after last year's security crisis.

Holland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Denmark, Greece, Poland, Portugal, Belgium and Turkey have sent soldiers totake part in the "Amber Fox" mission, aimed to guarantee the safety of international observers from the EU and OSCE.
